A-Z Climate Change Workshop
A multi-faith declaration on the global climate crisis and the promotion
of appropriate alternative energy Woljeongsa Temple,
Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, South Korea 24-25 April 2015
Faith-based organisations in cooperation with civil society members including
environmental organisations gathered at Woljeongsa Temple in Pyeong Chang,
Republic of Korea for a two day workshop to study and reflect on the causes,
consequences, duties and actions related to the crisis of climate change.
Delegates came from Korea, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia,
Sri Lanka, Thailand, Austria, Hungary and South Africa. Delegates included followers
of Islam, Catholic and Protestant Christianity, Wonbulgyo, Buddhist denominations
including Zen, Pure Lands, Vajrayana and Theravada, as well as the Brahma Kumaris.
The workshop studied the causes, impacts, risks and vulnerabilities caused by anthropogenic
(human caused) greenhouse gas emissions. The workshop further studied the issue of ocean
acidification and the serious risks posed to biodiversity, ecosystems integrity, food security
and human well-being. Particular attention was given to vulnerable communities and threats
to peace and social cohesion.
The meeting studied the international instruments related to resolving climate change,
notably the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The meeting reflected
on local wisdom, values and knowledge.
The workshop reflected on the role of religion and scriptures, traditional wisdom and modern
innovative ideas in response to climate change and its origin in human behaviour, ethics and
our approach to economic development, industry and technology.
The meeting noted that we are living according to an unsustainable paradigm where
certain human behaviours are placing the climate and ecosystems in grave danger. Globally,
our political-economies are attached to growth-models which drive the emissions of greenhouse
gases and the destruction of nature which is the underlying fabric of life on our planet.
The situation at the United Nations and in some of our home countries indicates that our political
systems are not responding fast enough to the threats.
The origin of the problem is in human behaviour and appropriate action is required to inspire
personal and collective behaviour changes sufficient to prevent catastrophic loss of life, both
human and non-human. Our crisis is fundamentally one of conscience and ethics.
The meeting agreed that religion is a source of ancient wisdom and a repository of our deepest
values. In many countries, religious leaders are held in high regard and it is the duty of religious
leaders, organisations and congregations to understand the harm that is arising from our current
behaviour and to transform this into a new paradigm that values life.
All of our religions call on us to love others as we love ourselves. Compassion, generosity,
mindfulness, love and a respect for life have to be at the heart of our civilisations if we are
to survive this current phase.
We rejoice in the examples of faith-based initiatives to promote alternative energies.
We make an urgent call to all religious organisations, congregations and other social movements
to end the use of fossil fuels as soon as possible. Our churches, temples, mosques and schools
need to be leading by example.
We noted that we should not naively leap into renewable energies without recognizing that
alternative energies also bring their own environmental and social problems. As we embrace
alternative energy sources, we should not be repeating the mistakes of the unsustainable paradigm.
We need to be mindful to bring change through consensus and respect for diversity. Several of
our participating communities expressed particular concern about the life-negating use
of nuclear power.
We call on all levels and types of leadership to promote climate and environmental solutions as
contributing to moral development, as spiritual practice, as well as building peaceful, sustainable
and compassionate communities.
We pray for the safety of those most vulnerable to climate change. We honour the abundance
of the living world. We find inspiration in our relationship with nature. We recognize our duty
to the generations to come.
Through this declaration, we share our reflections with others for the well-being of the world.
May these ideas inspire positive actions by people of faith everywhere. May our ignorance be washed
away and our hearts be inspired by cooperation and good-will. May we be humble and consistent
in this endeavour.

기후변화 A-Z 워크숍
세계적인 기후 위기와 적절한 대체 에너지 촉진에 관한 다종교적 선언
강원도 평창, 월정사
2015년 4월 24-25일
종교에 기반한 단체들이 환경 단체들을 포함한 시민단체들과 함께 한국 평창의 월정사에 모여
이틀 동안 기후변화 위기에 관련된 원인, 결과, 의무, 행동에 관해 공부하고 성찰하는 워크숍을 가졌다.
참가자들은 한국, 방글라데시, 부탄, 캄보디아, 라오스, 인도네시아, 스리랑카, 태국, 오스트리아,
헝가리, 남아프리카 등에서 왔으며, 이슬람교, 천주교와 개신교, 원불교, 그리고 선불교, 정토불교,
금강승 불교, 테라바다 불교 등 여러 종교 전통과 브라마쿠마리스가 포함되어 있었다.
워크숍은 인간이 야기한 온실가스 방출의 원인, 영향, 위험 및 취약성을 다루었으며, 또한 해양의
산성화와 그것이 생물다양성, 생태계의 온전성, 식량안전, 인간복지에 미치는 심각한 위험성의
문제도 다루었다. 기후변화에 취약한 지역사회, 그리고 평화와 사회응집에 가해지는 위협에 대해서
특별한 관심이 집중되었다.
워크숍은 기후변화를 해결하는 국제적인 기구들 중에서 특히 유엔기후변화협약(UNFCCC)에 관해
살펴보았고, 지역의(local) 지혜, 가치관, 지식에 관해서도 숙고했다.
워크숍은 또한 기후변화에 대응하는 종교와 경전, 전통적인 지혜, 현대의 혁신적인 아이디어들의
역할에 관해서, 그리고 기후변화의 기원이 인간의 행동과 윤리, 경제개발 및 산업기술에 대한 우리의
접근방법에 있음을 통찰했다.
또한 우리의 인간 행동이 기후와 생태계를 크게 위험에 빠트리는 지속 불가능한 패러다임에 근거한
삶에서 비롯되는 것임에 주목했다. 세계적으로 우리의 정치 경제는 지구의 생명의 근간을 이루는
자연을 파괴하고 온실가스를 방출하는 성장모델에 집착하고 있다. 유엔과 일부 국가에서의 상황은
우리의 정치제도가 위협에 신속하게 대응하지 못함을 보여준다.
문제의 근원은 인간의 행동에 있으며, 인간과 다른 생명체들의 파국적인 손실을 예방할 수 있을 만한
개인과 집단적인 행동의 변화를 고취시키기 위해서는 적절한 조치가 필요하다. 우리의 위기는
근본적으로 양심과 윤리의 위기다.
참가자들은 종교가 고대 지혜의 원천이며 우리의 가장 심오한 가치관의 보고라는 점에 의견을 모았다.
많은 나라에서 종교 지도자들은 높이 존경되고, 따라서 종교지도자들과 조직 및 신도들의 의무는 인간의
현재의 행동으로 인한 폐해를 이해하고 생명을 가치 있게 여기는 새로운 패러다임으로 전환하는 것이다.
모든 종교들이 우리에게 우리 자신뿐 아니라 타인을 사랑하도록 요구한다. 우리 앞에 놓인 현재의
국면을 타개하려면 자비, 관대, 마음챙김, 사랑, 생명존중이 우리 문명의 핵심에 놓여야 한다.
우리는 대체 에너지를 장려하는 종교에 기반한 이니셔티브들의 예를 반기며, 모든 종교 단체,
신도 및 기타 사회운동들이 가능한 한 빨리 화석연료의 사용을 종식할 것을 긴급하게 촉구한다.
교회, 절, 사원, 학교들은 모범을 보임으로써 선도적인 역할을 할 필요가 있다.
우리는 대체 에너지도 또한 그 나름대로의 환경적, 사회적 문제들을 안고 있다는 인식 없이 순진하게
재생 에너지에 뛰어들어서는 안 되며, 대체 에너지를 받아들이는데 있어서 지속 불가능한 패러다임의
실수를 되풀이해서는 안 된다는 점을 주지했다. 우리는 합의와 다양성의 존중을 통해 변화를
가져오도록 유의할 필요가 있다. 몇몇 참가자들은 생명을 죽이는 핵발전의 사용에 대해 특별히 우려를
표명했다.
우리는 모든 수준의 다양한 지도자들에게 기후와 환경에 대한 해결책이 도덕성 함양과 영적 수행에
도움이 될 뿐 아니라 평화롭고, 지속 가능하며, 자비로운 공동체를 형성하는 데도 기여한다는 점을
널리 알릴 것을 촉구한다.
우리는 기후변화에 가장 취약한 사람들의 안전을 위해 기도하며, 뭇 생명체들 의 풍요로움을 귀히 여기고,
자연과 우리의 관계 속에서 영감을 발견한다. 우리는 미래 세대에 대한 우리의 의무를 인식한다.
이 선언을 통해 우리는 세계의 안녕을 위해 우리가 숙고한 바를 남들과 나누며, 이 아이디어들이 모든
신앙인들에게 긍정적인 행동을 고취시키기를 바란다. 우리의 무지는 사라지고, 가슴 속에는 협동과
선의의 정신이 피어나기를 바란다. 우리는 겸손하고 일관된 자세로 이 노력에 임하고자 한다.
